1604-CS : Access Control

Introduction

The 1604-CS is able to provide access control functions for all domestic as well as commercial applications using a variety of identification technologies.

Dallas Touch Key example:

At the door being controlled there is a reader. When the touch key makes contact with the reader a unique serial number is read from the key. If the serial number is correct, the door is unlocked.

A large number of individual touch keys can be stored for each door. There can be one controlled door per Smart Switch module. This is ideally suited to home automation, having access control on the front and back doors. The system will easily accommodate garage side doors and special (secure) rooms within the home.

Why Use Dallas Touch Keys

The most common access control identification devices are cards, like credit cards. The most common of these are:

    • Magnetic Strip. This is the same as credit card. The codes are stored in the magnetic strip on the back of the card. These are easily damaged, and with the right equipment copied.

    • Wiegand. This looks like a credit card without a magnetic strip. The codes are built into the card. These are more robust, but can still be copied. A common problem with these cards is the relatively small code number. There are most likely many duplicate cards in circulation already.

    • Proximity. This also looks like a credit card but is usually a bit thicker. The cards are quite smart. The code is transmitted to the reader when close enough (usually 2 to 6 inches). These cards are quite robust and very difficult to copy. The biggest disadvantage is the higher cost of the reader.

    • Others. There are a few other types of cards and key devices but they are not as common or going out of favour.

This brings us back to the Dallas touch keys. They have been used here because of their low cost and relatively high level of security. The reader is simple, economical and reliable. The buttons are laser coded during manufacture. This means that as long as Dallas Semiconductor keep track of the numbers there will never be duplicates produced.

Full Blown Commercial Access Control

With the addition of a new Access Control Module the 1604-CS will be able to handle full scale commercial access control.
